Summary
Pages twenty-two through thirty-three of WRITING ABOUT WRITING was a very informative section on an experiment of hunter and gathering types for research articles. During this experiment, Michael Kleine interviewed eight different people with different majors to explore the way in which they begin their writing/research. However, Kleine did not tell the interviewers of the chart and where they were plotted on the scale of hunting and gathering until after he made his annotations. During the feedback, none of the subjects remembered writing for an authority figure, rather, for a concerned community of peers. Kleine noticed a division between the many sciences and social sciences he interviewed. Perhaps, he thought, the division expresses the different thoughts and attitudes between the sciences. People varied when it came to beginning by reviewing factual text or beginning by writing their thoughts and goals through framing. I do agree with Kleine when he says the model does have its limitations, but I also believe that it has tremendous potential to expand a writers approach and abilities.
QDJ
1. It is eye opening to read about Kleine's findings. I found guilt settling over me because of the way I structure my writing and dive into searching for facts. Many times I have ignored actually alligning myself with a point of view, and half heartedly search for supporting facts for my thesis.
3. The role of the sources are always important, however, the obtaining of these sources vary amung the different attitudes of the sciences. That directly alligns with my research depending on the type of course or subject I am studying. For example, searching for english sources requires a research of high level academic writers. Where as, history is a subject that makes it much more enticing to chop shop a paper together with many facts.
4. I would change my reasearch by focusing more on the gathering end of the spectrum. I would most likely need to develop my pattern seeking abilities. Based off my past experience with research, my ability to do so is almost non exsistant.
